Many of you hear the word “CrossFit” and immediately dismiss the idea as something you can’t do. Many people see CrossFit, the sport, and assume that’s what the CrossFit gyms in their neighborhood are all about.
It’s not. We often talk about what CrossFit is. How about this time we discuss what CrossFit isn’t and who you can find in the gym down the street that is changing their lives doing it.
CrossFit is not a program where intensity comes first. The goal is to help you improve your fitness, not make you an elite athlete. That being said even elite athletes have to follow a plan of progression and improvement from wherever they start. That same principle applies to us normal people. We figure out where you are and what’s your fitness level, injury history, past experience, and current goals. We use this information to help you work your way into better health. It’s not all about going hard all the time.
CrossFit is not about competition. There are other people in class with you who are all working on their own goals. Their focus is on what they have in front of them to accomplish, just like yours is. The motivation you get from being around other people who are working hard will help you get through the workouts. No one cares how you did and no one is racing you. If you finish first or last, all that matters is that you worked hard.
CrossFit is not going to get you hurt. Not only is intensity the last thing a good CrossFit gym worries about, but technique is the first thing a good CrossFit gym will focus on. The training process is to teach proper movement and technique first. As your fitness improves and you are able to consistently perform the proper movements safely, then you can increase your intensity to a level that allows you to push your fitness further, but not so far that your technique suffers and you get hurt. It’s a balancing act that repeats itself over and over. As you get better and consistently show good form, then you can push a little harder.
CrossFit is not just a workout. CrossFit is a method and the basis for a program that improves people’s health. It’s not just a killer workout that will blast you and leave you in a puddle of sweat on the floor. CrossFit includes coaching, progressive programming, scaling, nutrition, and so many other pieces to the puzzle that provide a comprehensive solution to many health needs.
Anyone can give you a crushing workout. What most people need is a plan and someone to help guide them forward……That is CrossFit.
Who is doing CrossFit?
You’ve probably seen all the super fit athletes competing on TV and watch as they do some seriously amazing things. Those aren’t the people in your local gym just trying to get fit and healthy. That’s not who CrossFit serves. CrossFit exists to help people like you and me enjoy life more and have more fun.
