“I can’t believe I did that!”
As a coach, this is one of the most satisfying phrases I could ever hear from one of our members. I’m blessed to hear it often.
When my mother who is 60+ years old got her first box jump, it was one of the highlights of my career as a fitness professional. When a member comes in and can’t stop talking about how she had to go shopping for a whole new wardrobe, I get goosebumps. Watching a guy who has been practicing a new movement for weeks, finally get it right for the first time, makes my day better.
Being part of the process has given me a unique perspective on the challenges everyone faces in working to stay healthy. Outside of my own struggles (we all have them), I understand how difficult it is to fit exercise into your schedule and keep it there. I also get to see how amazing it is, and the benefits people get when they commit to making it work.
There are so many things that could come in-between you and your goals. It’s hard sometimes to keep a focus on what’s important. “Life happens” way too often and sometimes we let ourselves get derailed for long periods of time. Then getting back on track can be even harder than it was just getting started to begin with.
In my position, I’ve seen it all. When I look at those people who have been successful in maintaining fitness in their lives here’s what I see….
They know why they’re doing it. One member we have has directly correlated her success in business to her persistence in regular class attendance. She knows that when she doesn’t get into the gym she loses her edge and it affects her career. She feels more energized, focused, confident, self-assured, and capable of handling whatever comes her way.
Keeping why you want to be fit in front of you can be hard. You have to find something that will overcome, job schedules, kid activities, and whatever else might get in the way. Find your why!
They make themselves a priority. Some people give so much to make sure their families and friends are getting what they need that they completely neglect themselves. 1. If they don’t take care of themselves, then they CAN’T take care of others. 2. They deserve more. Period.
I have heard so many times from members who have committed to their health that their families WANT them to come to the gym because they understand the importance of what does for them to handle day to day stress. When they accomplish things in the gym and overcome the struggles of maintaining their fitness, it empowers them to care that momentum into their everyday life. Who couldn’t use more of that?
They find a way to make it happen. Travel, kid’s schedules, work schedules, exercise and fitness, and other activities are always clawing for their attention and focus. Each of these will have their time in the spotlight. Busy people have a way of making sure all of the demands on their lives get the attention they deserve. The trick is to make sure they don’t get too much time. They can’t spend all their time at work or at the gym. There needs to be a balance. Finding a way to fit exercise and eating right into their schedule, may mean less time doing something else.
They know how worth it, it is to make that change. Finding people to watch the kids, bringing the kids to the gym, leaving work ON TIME, not going to beer night on Friday evening, swapping classes with their spouse,…all things that make it possible to stay on track because they know why they want to and need to do it.
You have the power to change your ability to handle stress, work longer, and play harder. The opportunity is in your hands to improve your quality of life. The more you enable yourself to overcome the challenges of life the fewer challenges you feel like you need to handle. Once you’ve climbed a mountain, what’s another hilltop?
Bonus Points: People that make their fitness a priority also associate with other people who think the same way. Building relationships with positive, motivating, and dedicated people is the best way to keep yourself motivated. Your tribe will help keep you accountable, and your success becomes everyone’s success.
